I'm a bestselling mystery thriller author of The Athenian Murders, The Saturn House Killings and Cold Secrets. Life of late (September/October edition):

1. A trip to Lisbon with my mum and brother. It's really just a treat of a city, isn't it? As usual, "I could definitely live here" was repeated x 127.

2. Cats and pumpkins are an excellent pairing. Not in soup, obviously. But in autumnal aesthetics.

3. I stole this photo from my brother (my mum and brother visited Saguenay, too). It was the best fall colour display yet. Unfortunately (or fortunately), no moose were spotted.

4. We did a little bit of hiking, but, as you can see, I've hurt my poor old lady knee, so I was somewhat curtailed.

5. What does a 38 year old taking up ballet for the first time in 20 years look like? The grinning just hasn't stopped. This is, incidentally, what agitated the poor old lady knee. Apparently, I must now squat like my life depends on it.

6. I found an Agatha I didn't love. It's one of her early ones from 1929 and she experiments with a spy thriller vibe, rather than her taut mystery formula.

The first: I'm very much enjoying The Fate of Mary Rose by Caroline Blackwood. It's best paired with a cocktail supporting a tense and subtle twist, like a martini with a pickled green tomato. Or, if you don't drink, a spiced sparkling apple juice with a hint of cayenne pepper. Or you can just read it. Whatever floats your boat.

It's been such a wonderful few months of reading. Here are some favourites - a delicious mix of mystery, thriller, and lit. fic. books.

Famous Last Words by Gillian McAllister: I feel like nobody does a hook like Gillian McAllister! A woman receives news of a hostage situation involving her husband... then finds out her husband is the perpetrator. A fantastic thriller, almost impossible not to lap it up.

Slags by Emma Jane Unsworth: I've never felt such a concentrated concoction of nostalgia and trauma in equal parts. If you're my age and grew up in any type of suburb, I think you'll feel the same.

Borrower of the Night by Elizabeth Peters: written in the 70s, this is an art history mystery thriller. It couldn't have been written with me in mind, but also, it must have been.

Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie: one of my favourite Agatha facts is that she accompanied her second husband, archaeologist Sir Max Edgar Mallowan, on his various digs around the world. They met at an excavation in Ur in 1930, and this whodunnit was published six years later. It's everything I love about Christie.

Transit by Rachel Cusk: the second in the Outline trilogy, this meandering autofiction is set in London. Like the brilliant Outline, its observations of human interactions are somehow both mundane and soul-shattering.

Ecstasy by Ivy Pochoda: everybody read this right now! It's a modern retelling of The Bacchae. Just brilliant and drunk and infectious.

The Perfect Stranger by Tara Lyons: a cinematic psych-thriller that I devoured on the beach.

Life of late:

1. Will's parents came to stay and treated us to the Hotel Tadoussac. It's the perfect setting for a murder mystery. G&T in hand on the manicured lawn, peering at the whales from beneath my floppy straw hat, I felt like I was in an Agatha Christie novel. Very 1940s core/chic.

2. It was the music festival in Tadoussac, so there was some lovely music on the rocks. The seagulls carried on as normal.

3. Following the Maltese Salt Flat Dance of 2024, I bring you the Covered Bridge Dance of 2025.

4. Don't let this fool you... so far, the summer has been a wash out with the exception of a few hot days. We used one of these to hike (I got grumpy, but you can't tell here).

5. Baie St-Marguerite is officially my favourite camping spot EVER. I love it so much. The whales say hello. The waters are beautiful. The skies always put on a show. So thankful that some mates joined us this time - a top couple of nights.

6. Where I read my book on the camping trip (at the moment a 1970s lost artifact mystery by Elizabeth Peters called Borrower of the Night).
